Average Earnings Index (AEI)
With the exception of the headline rate (see below) data for the whole economy, main industrial sectors and public and private sectors data relate to single months and quarterly data given is a three month average. Annual data are a 12-month average.
Headline Rate
The change in the average seasonally adjusted index values for the last three months compared with the same period a year ago. Quarterly data for the headline rate refers to the last month of the quarter i.e. March, June, September and December.
Underlying rate
The change in the unadjusted series over three months (including a forecast for the following month) adjusted to take account of pay arrears and the timing of bonus payments and pay awards. The underlying rate was discontinued in February 1998.
Data which exclude bonus payments are subject to a discontinuity between January and February 1999 as a result of a change in the survey questionnaire.
As a result of a discontinuity in the reporting of data for the agricultural sector the series is not yet available on a 1995=100 basis.
The index for the sector education, health and social work for the 1995=100 series is based on a sample which excludes representatives of the private health and social work sector until June 1998. Monthly movements in the index for this sector therefore exclude private health and social work up to May 1998.
Unit Wage Costs and Productivity
Quarterly data given is a three month average and annual data given is a 12-month average.
Workforce jobs series
A discontinuity occurred in the series in September 1995. This is due to the incorporation of revised data from the Annual Employment Survey (AES) which took into account more small businesses which register for VAT but do not run PAYE schemes. For further information, please see the technical report in Labour Market Trends, July 1998 pp 387-397.
