Trends in suicide rates by age group and gender have shown some marked differences in the last 25 years. For men aged 15 to 24, there were 16 suicides per 100,000 population in 2000,compared with a rate of 9 per 100,000 in 1974 and 10 per 100,000 a decade later (Chart 7.15).Suicide is now the cause of 22 per cent of deaths of men in this age group.The suicide rate for men aged 25 to 44 has increased considerably since the mid-1970s reaching a peak of almost 25.6 per 100,000 population in 1998;in 2000 the rate for that age group was 23.4 per 100,000.
