The Scottish Executive Justice Department obtains data from administrative sources on the number of receptions of remand, sentenced and civil prisoners and the number of children held on an unruly certificate to the 21 Scottish penal establishments. Data are available by establishment, age, sex, type of sentence, crime/offence classification and length of sentence.
Data cover Scotland and are available at penal establishment level.
Data on remand receptions were historically collected on a monthly basis, and twice a year on civil receptions. Data on sentenced receptions and children held on unruly certificates were collected monthly at a disaggregated level. The information is now received electronically from the Prisoner Records System.
