The Scottish Executive Justice Department obtains data from administrative sources on the number of breaches of discipline and punishments awarded in the 23 Scottish penal establishments. Data are available by establishment and sex.

The data cover Scotland and are available at penal establishment level.

The collection was revised in November 1994 following legislative changes introduced in The Prisons and Young Offenders Institutions (Scotland) Rules 1994. However, prior to this time, similar information was collected for breaches of discipline and punishments awarded under the old rules.

The survey is carried out annually and published in the July following the financial year end.
