The Scottish Executive Justice Department conducts a survey on the homicides recorded by each police force and the outcome of any criminal proceedings. Data are available by age and sex of victim, age and sex of accused, relationship of accused to victim, location of homicide, method of killing by sex of victim, motive for killing each victim, and whether drugs/drink known to be a factor.
Data cover Scotland and are available at police force area level and local authority area.
The survey commenced in its current format in 1978. It is carried out annually and the results are published every other year by way of bulletin with a statistical release in alternate years. Figures are made available around the November following the calendar year end.
