The Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR) compiles data on designated areas and protected areas. They include the area covered by National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs), National Scenic Areas (NSAs) in Scotland and Heritage Coasts. There are also data on the number and area of National Nature Reserves (NNRs), Local Nature Reserves (LNRs), Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), Marine Nature Reserves, Special Protection Areas (SPAs), Ramsar Wetland Sites, Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs), Biosphere Reserves and Biogenetic Reserves.
