The latest national statistics on the Occupational Pension Scheme Survey produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 23 September 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Employee membership of private sector defined benefit occupational pension schemes – often referred to as ‘final salary’ schemes – continues to decline. It fell from 3.0 million in 2006 to 2.7 million in 2007
Employee membership of private sector defined contribution schemes – also known as money purchase schemes – has changed little in recent years. It stood at 0.9 million in 2007
Total membership of occupational pension schemes (employees, pensions in payment and preserved pensions rights) was estimated at 26.7 million in 2007, the same as in 2006
