Migration is an important driver of population change and the most difficult component to estimate. Increases in globalisation, expansion of the EU, political instability in many regions of the world and the rise in access to travel have all led to a substantial rise in the size and nature of UK international migration.
The UK has no compulsory registration of migration and there are no comprehensive administrative sources. Therefore estimating migration is complex. ONS set up a Task Force on migration statistics with other Government Departments to identify improvements that could be made over the coming years.
