Regional Trends 41

Children and young people are the subject of this year's lead article in Regional Trends. The experiences of children and young people in the UK vary greatly depending on where a child lives and the type of area they live in. The article looks at the differences between regions, local communities and urban and rural localities in key topics such as children's family types, household income deprivation, and children's health, education and sentencing for crime.

Regional Trends is an annual report painting a statistical picture of areas within the UK, to assist in understanding the complex relationships between locations and the people who live there. The articles are likely to be of interest to policy makers in central and local government, academics and students, the media and the general public.

The 2009 edition also features an article on women in business and detailed statistical portraits of three regions - Yorkshire and The Humber, East Midlands and East of England. There are also articles designed to help researchers measure change over time in small areas and how area classifications can be used to interrogate the Indices of Multiple Deprivation.

It also provides a guide to the comparative regional tables. These are a comprehensive source of official statistics for the regions of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, including demographic, social, industrial and economic data.
