Open any newspaper on any day of the week and you are likely to find numerous articles quoting figures compiled by GSS statisticians.
The Government Statistical Service is the UK’s largest provider of statisticians, with over 1200 professionals in more than 30 departments and agencies, making valued input to every major government activity.

You'll need an appreciation of statistics, the drive and determination to train as a professional statistician and a desire to make a career in statistics.
Applications from those whose degrees contain formal statistical training are particularly welcome.
Assistant Statistician (AS)
To apply for a Fast Stream Assistant Statistician post, you should already have, or hope to obtain in 2009, a first or second class honours degree in a numerate discipline (eg mathematics, economics, sciences, business studies, psychology and geology).
We will be accepting applications from 15 September 2008 to 31 October 2008 and again from 01 February 2009 to 30 April 2009..

Statistical Officer (StO)
To apply you should have, or hope to obtain in 2009, a first or second class honours degree in a numerate discipline (eg mathematics, economics, sciences, business studies, psychology, geography). Please check our Nationality regulations before completing any application.
We also welcome applications from candidates who do not have a degree but can demonstrate at least two years experience in a statistics-related field, plus Continuing Professional Development in a relevant area leading to acquisition of qualifications (eg the RSS higher certificate).
The next closing dates for this scheme are 3 October 2008 and 23 January 2009.
Temporary Statistical Officer (TSO)
We also recruit TSOs separately to fill urgent vacancies for departments.
Applications are circulated by the GSS Recruiitment team to departments as vacancies arise. The departments then carry out their own selection processes, normally by interview.
You need to have graduated and be ready to start work within a month. The minimum entry qualification is as the same as for a Statistical Officer.
The posts will be for periods of up to 12 months, with the possibility of extension or permanency. There is no closing date for this scheme.
