UK STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
UK SIC(92)

Operation 2007

The UK Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activities (UK SIC(92)) is used to classify business establishments and other statistical units by the type of economic activities they are engaged in. Information on the origins, legal basis and many other aspects of the UK SIC(92) is given in the Introduction

To find the classification code for a specific activity, click on an appropriate link in the "Summary of Sections and Subsection" which follows (for example, to classify a retail activity click on Section G

this will take you to a breakdown of the structure of Section G. Within this view, select the appropriate kind of retail activity (for example, retail of electrical household appliances is in Class 52.45). Clicking on the link 52.45 will take you to the relevant Explanatory note which gives further information on the kind of retail sales covered by Class 52.45 and any exclusions.

An alternative approach is to use the Alphabetical Index which lists activities or, sometimes, products, and shows the UK SIC(92) Class or Subclass to which the activity or product should be classified. Clicking on any SIC(92) Class or Subclass listed in the index will take you to its Explanatory Note. The Index also attempts to provide a correlation to the previous Standard Industrial Classification, SIC(80), although in some cases it was not possible to do so without further information. The link indicated should, therefore, not be taken to be definitive. Activities and products may be known under different names and some have been classified under several alternative titles. It has not been possible to list all variations, however.

There is also a facility to allow you to search the SIC(92) pages but for finding the correct code for a specific activity, it is recommended that the approaches outlined above be tried first.
