National Statistics Quality Review - National Travel Survey
Statement from Len Cook, National Statistician (3 May 2001)

"I am pleased to announce the release by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) of the quality review of the National Travel Survey (NTS). This is the third of the reviews foreseen in the White Paper 'Building Trust in Statistics', and the first to be conducted outside the Office for National Statistics."

"The review has shown that the NTS is of good quality and is fit for its purpose of monitoring trends in personal travel."

"NTS customers are generally satisfied with the current survey and want the NTS to continue in much the same form as at present. However, the demand for detailed information on personal travel has been increasing, leading to the need to increase the NTS sample size. DETR Ministers have agreed to a significant increase in the survey sample size from 2002, funded under the 2000 Spending Review."

"Customers' needs and the methodology review have highlighted a number of quality improvements, and a programme of work is now in place to implement these."
