5 MARRIAGE AND COHABITATION
 
  Women aged 16 to 59 and dependent children  
 

A total of 49% of women aged 16 to 59 had no children living with them, while 42% had at least one dependent child and 9% only non-dependent children living with them. The proportion of women aged 16 to 59 with children varied according to their marital status.

Among women aged 16 to 59:

  • 51% of married women and 37% of cohabiting women had at least one dependent child living with them compared with 20% of single women and 17% of widows;
  • single women were the most likely to have no children living with them; 79% compared with 65% of widows, 61% of cohabiting women, and 35% of both married and separated women;
  • 14% of married women and 13% of both divorced and separated women had non-dependent children living with them;
  • nearly two thirds (65%) of women with dependent children were married, 12% were cohabiting and 10% were single.
