  Private renters  
 
  • Private renter households were more likely to live in converted flats, maisonettes or rooms than any other tenure group (19% compared with 3% of social sector tenants and 2% of owner occupiers).
  • A higher proportion of private renters lived in accommodation built before 1919; 45% compared with 7% of social sector tenants and 23% of owner occupiers.
  • Over a quarter of private renter households (27%) consisted of one adult aged 16-59. This was higher than among either social sector tenants (17%) or owner occupiers (13%).
  • The household reference person in private renter households tended to be younger than those in other tenure households; 36% were aged less than 30 compared with 7% of household reference persons in owner occupied households and 13% in social renter households
  • The average household income of private renters in 2001 was £398 gross per week.
