4 HOUSING AND CONSUMER DURABLESCHARACTERISTICS OF TENURE GROUPS

  Owner occupiers

  • The majority of owner occupiers lived in a house (90%). Almost two-thirds (64%) lived in a detached or semi-detached house and 26% lived in terraced houses. Of the remaining 10% who lived in a flat or room, 8% lived in a purpose built flat or maisonette while 2% lived in a converted flat/maisonette or room.
  • About a third (34%) of outright owners lived in a detached house compared with a quarter (25%) of those buying their home on a mortgage. This latter group were more likely than outright owner occupiers to be living in a terraced house (29% compared with 22%).
  • Unlike other tenure groups owner occupiers' accommodation was fairly evenly spread between properties of all ages.
  • Among outright owners the median age of the household reference person was 65 to 69 compared with 30 to 44 for households who were buying with a mortgage.
  • Lone parent families with dependent children were less than half as likely to be owner occupiers with a mortgage compared with other families with dependent children (29% of lone parent families were owner occupiers with a mortgage compared with 71% of other families with dependent children).
  • Of all households, those buying with a mortgage had on average the highest household income (£713 gross per week).
