People aged 16 to 59 were asked whether they had any stepchildren living with them. As in previous years, the great majority of stepfamilies consisted of those with one or more children from the woman's previous relationship:

• 83% consisted of a couple with a child or children from the woman's previous relationship;
• 9% were a couple with at least one child from the man's previous relationship;
• 8% were families containing children from previous relationships of both partners.
