Men were more likely than women to be classified in the professional group, 8% and 3% respectively in 2000. There were also proportionately fewer women in the employers and managers group than men, 12% and 21% respectively in 2000 but the proportion of women in this group has tripled since 1975 when 4% of women were classified as employers and managers.
The proportion of men in the skilled manual group has declined since 1975 when 41% of men were in this group. In 2000, 33% of men were in the skilled manual socio-economic group.
