  People - ageing of the population  
 

The gradual ageing of the British population has been reflected in the GHS sample since 1971. In 1971, 4% of people were aged 75 or over compared with 7% in 1998. In 2000, this age group still represented 7% of the population.

Almost two-thirds of those aged 75 and over were women.
