Compositional Multivariate Time Series Analysis of the Savings and Loans by the Micro finance Institutions in Maharashtra State (India) |
| Abstract |
The emerging concept of micro finance for the alleviation of poverty is now widely accepted in new economy. In India, with financial support from IFAD, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and the Maharashtra State Government have undertaken a project having micro finance as a major component, aiming at alleviation of rural poverty. The multivariate time series data, relating to savings and loans disbursed for different purposes to about 73,454 rural entrepreneurs participating under the project, has many unique features. For the successful implementation and replication of such projects systematic analysis for understanding the structural aspects of the changes over time in borrowing behavior of the rural population is needed. Therefore, for this savings and loans data, we have developed a model using the compositional multivariate time series analysis. The savings in the micro finance institutions are considered as covariates in this analysis. The model serves three objectives; exploring the structure of this micro finance phenomenon, forecasting the demand for loans, and further providing a systematic method for monitoring the scheme and for making timely decisions. |
