Do innovations affect mergers and acquisitions? |
| Abstract |
The main part of the product innovations commercialised by the Finnish business firms in the latter half of the 1990s consisted of ICT-innovations. In a recent paper (Lehto, Lehtoranta 2002b) we studied, whether these innovations affect ownership structures by means of mergers and acquisitions (M&A). We found that in other than the processing industries the possession of a major product innovation affected the likelihood that the innovative firm or a part of it was a few years later merged or acquired by some established firm. M&A was used to transfer technology, and specifically information and communication technology from an innovator to the product market firm. It seems that in many cases contractual arrangements between competitive firms are ruled out and a firm is acquired and/or wants to be acquired, if there is a need to search for new technology and, on the other hand, to search for entry to the product market. |
