Recent Development of IT Indicators in Japan |
| Abstract |
The Statistical Research and Training Institute has developed a framework for systematically collecting IT statistics, and has introduced three aspects to capture the development of IT: infrastructure, usage and impact. Using this framework, we have collected statistics concerning IT for the compendium entitled IT Indicators in Japan, which was published at the opportunity of the IAOS Satellite Meeting on Statistics for the Information Society, August 2001, Tokyo, Japan. In the process, we have pointed out the problems with the existing statistics on IT, such as insufficiency of statistics on usage and impact.
To fulfill the needs for IT statistics, the SBJ has made many efforts.
1) The Standard Industrial Classification for Japan (JSIC) was revised, and a major item "Information and Communication Industry" was newly established.
2) New questions on use of e-commerce were added to the Establishment and Enterprise Census which was held on October 2001.
3) New monthly survey, the Survey of Household Economy was launched on October 2001. This survey collects data on purchase and ownership of IT-related goods and services and use of the Internet, in order to monitor the trend of IT use in a timely manner.
4) New questions on IT were added to a large-scale sample survey for households and individuals. The results of the Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities conducted on October 2001 will be the first material for the evaluation of digital divide among Japanese people.
The preliminary results of 2), 3) and 4) will be released by this summer, and the presentation will contain analyses of these results. |
