Technical Data

Information on Public Transport Statistics is collected as follows:

  • Information on local bus services and non-local buses and coaches is derived from Department for Transport’s (DfT) annual Public Service Vehicle (PSV) survey of bus and coach operators in Great Britain

  • Quarterly estimates of bus journeys are derived from the above PSV survey, data from Transport for London (TfL), data for the 6 metropolitan areas from the English Passenger Transport Executives and information supplied to the Department for Transport from the largest bus operators

  • The quarterly Bus Passenger Satisfaction Survey combines the results of two separate surveys: one commissioned by TfL and another one covering England (outside London), which is done under contract for DfT

  • The Mystery Traveller Survey includes a survey commissioned by TfL and one survey commissioned by DfT in the 9 largest urban areas in England outside London

  • The bus fares index is derived from a quarterly survey of bus fares covering around 80 of the largest bus operators

  • Bus punctuality statistics are derived from bus punctuality surveys every two years (biennial)

Other data sources:

  • Bus service reliability statistics come from data supplied by Transport for London (TfL) and a quarterly Department for Transport (DfT) survey covering the 80 of the largest bus operators

  • Information on light rail is derived from the DfT’s annual Survey of Light Rail Systems in Great Britain

  • Information on concessionary fares come from the biennial survey of Travel Concession Authorities in England and Wales

  • Information on taxi licensing authorities in England and Wales is collected via a biennial survey

  • Blue Badge statistics come from an annual survey of the number of Blue Badges issued by local authorities in England to individuals who have disabilities, and to institutions such as care homes

Glossary

  • Blue Badge (parking scheme)

The Blue Badge scheme provides a range of parking concessions for people with severe mobility problems who have difficulty using public transport. The scheme operates throughout the UK and the concessions provided under the scheme apply to on-street parking only. For example, Blue Badge holders may park for free and for as long as they need to at on-street parking meters and pay-and-display machines, unless there is a traffic sign specifying a time limit for holders of Blue Badges.

  • Concessionary fares

Concessionary bus fares scheme offer discounted travel on local public transport for older and disabled people. From 1 April 2008, these groups get free off-peak travel (usually after 9.30 am) on all local buses anywhere. Local authorities retain the discretion to offer their residents other travel concessions as well. Such voluntary concessions might include concessionary travel before 9.30 am and discounted travel for other groups such as children and students.

  • Light rail

Light rail systems inGreat Britain include Blackpool Tramway, Croydon Tramlink, Docklands Light Railway, Glasgow Subway, Manchester Metrolink, Midland Metro, Nottingham NET, Sheffield Supertram, and Tyne & Wear Metro.

  • Public Service Agreement

A Public Service Agreement is underpinned by a single Delivery Agreement, shared across all contributing departments, and developed in consultation with delivery partners and frontline workers. For example by 2010, increase the use of public transport (bus and light rail) by more than 12 per cent in England compared with 2000 levels, with growth in every region.

  • Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators

Operators licensed by the Traffic Area Office to operate public bus, coach or minibus services.
