This statistical bulletin presents information on hearing aid assessments and re-assessments by audiologists in Northern Ireland. Information has been derived from the quarterly collection AUD1 and monitors information on both adults and children fitted and assessed for hearing aids during the quarter, complaints received, and cost of hearing aids issued. In addition, the collection monitors complete and incomplete waits for assessment during the quarter and the length of time patients were waiting or had waited following referral to an audiologist (specified time bands).
The release includes information on staff in post across all NHS staff groups as well as vacancy information for Nursing & Midwifery and Allied Health Professions. Information on Community & Hospital Medical and Dental staff and staff employed in the General Medical Service (GPs) and General Dental Service (GDS) is also included.

Overview
There are over 1 million staff employed by the NHS. What they do, where they work, their age and gender profiles are key to workforce planning for the future requirements of the service and identifying training needs. Coupled with vacancy and turnover rates, these are used across the NHS and by government.

Numbers of NHS Staff
Workforce statistics are compiled from data sent by more than 300 NHS trusts and primary care trusts in England. The NHS Information Centre for health and social care liaises closely with these organisations to encourage submission of complete and valid data and seeks to minimise inaccuracies and the effect of missing and invalid data.
Data are extracted from the trusts’ payroll system (ESR: Electronic Staff Record) and the GP payments system.

A vacancy is defined as one which employers are actively trying to fill as at 31 March

A three-month vacancy is defined as one which has lasted three months or more and which employers are actively trying to fill as at 31 March

Vacancy rates are calculated using: the number of full-time equivalent vacancies, divided by the full-time equivalent staff in post, plus the number of full-time equivalent vacancies

This ratio is expressed as a percentage. The full time equivalent staff in post figures are taken from the workforce census results that were collected in the previous September

Bank staff
Staff who work through NHS Professionals or the hospitals' own bank arrangements.

Basic Salary
This is the ‘standard’ basic pay paid to an individual, which is normally a factor of their Agenda for Change spine point, and their hours worked.

Country of qualification for doctors
The primary medical qualification used to identify the country of qualification is based on information held on each individual doctor on the GMC register. The countries are grouped into UK, European Economic Area (EEA) and Elsewhere.

Doctors: Registrar group (exc. GPs)
Cover: specialist registrars (SpRs); senior registrars; registrars; specialty registrars (StRs) who are on run through specialist training (ST grades); and other staff working at equivalent grades that are not in an educationally approved post.

Doctors in training and equivalents (exc. GPs)
Covers: the registrar group; senior house officer; specialty registrars (StRs) who are on fixed term specialty training appointments (FTSTAs); house officers; foundation programme for doctors years one and two; and other staff working at equivalent grades that are not in an educationally approved post.

Earnings: Total
This is the total amount earned by an individual. In addition to basic pay, it includes payments for: hours related payments such as on call, shift working, and overtime; occupation payments such as clinical excellence awards or distinction awards; location payments such as location allowance and other local payments; recruitment and retention pay, and ‘other’ payments for issues such as occupational absence and protected pay.

Electronic Staff Record (ESR)
The standard Payroll and HR system used within the NHS. Data are extracted from this system to inform the figures for workforce numbers, earnings, turnover and sickness absence.

Ethnic Category
An individual’s ethnic category is self-determined. The list of categories we use was changed in 2001, to reflect those used in the 2001 National Population Census. Since 2001 we have allowed employers to return a mixture of old and new codes with a view to re-classifying existing staff. The data should be interpreted with caution because individuals would not necessarily classify themselves the same way when presented with two different lists of categories, even though some of the categories have the same name.

Full-time equivalents (FTE)
Some statistics are expressed in terms of full-time equivalents (FTE). For this purpose, numbers of part-time staff are converted into an equivalent number of ‘full-time’ staff by taking account of the weekly number of hours or sessions worked.

General Medical Services (GMS)
The contract under which most GPs are employed. It is a national agreement between the provider and the PCT that sets out the financial arrangements, the services to be provided and support arrangements.

GP Partnership
A financial arrangement between two or more bodies of which one must be a practitioner.

GP Registrar
A fully registered practitioner who is being trained for general practice under an arrangement approved by the Secretary of State.

GP Retainers
Practitioners who provide service sessions in general practice. They are employed by the partnership to undertake sessions and are allowed to work a maximum of four sessions of approximately half a day each week.

Personal Medical Services (PMS)
GP contact that allows them to negotiate a local agreement with their PCT for the services they will provide and payments they will receive.

Primary Care Trusts (PCTs)
Free standing statutory bodies that have their own budget for local health care. They commission the bulk of hospital and community health services for their local population and are able to provide health and other services.
