Overview

The June Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture is an annual survey that collects information relating to land use, crops, livestock, labour, horticulture and glasshouse.

Data are sought from a proportion of holdings only, the exception to this is every tenth year when EU regulations demand a complete census; 2000 was the most recent occasion this was undertaken. Other smaller sample surveys cover areas in more detail, for example: cereal production and stocks, farm practices, tenanted land rents, earnings and hours and orchard fruit.

Industry surveys collect information on packing, processing, production and usage of a variety of commodities including bacon, ham, milk, eggs, sugar and cereals.

Data are also gathered on wheat and cereal usage by millers, brewers, maltsters and distillers and in breakfast cereal manufacture. Other information collected includes livestock slaughter statistics data and animal feed production figures. As with the agricultural surveys some of the data are collected as a statutory requirement, other surveys are voluntary.

Technical Data

The June Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture and the other smaller surveys that cover this sector are based on a sample of holdings.

For the June Survey a random sampling approach is adopted in which holdings are divided into groups (strata) on the basis of their theoretical labour requirement, with higher sampling rates being used in the larger strata.

The survey is conducted by a postal questionnaire (or electronically via the Internet) and is a legal requirement under the authority of the Agricultural Statistics Act 1979; this requires the farmer to state what agricultural activity is happening on their land on the survey day in June.

The June Survey is only run for England but similar surveys are run in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Results are collated by Defra in York to produce UK level results.

Brewers, Distillers & Maltsters, Flour Millers and Animal Feeding Stuffs Surveys are conducted on a statutory basis. This is based on legal requirement under The Statistics of Trade Act 1947. The surveys monitor cereal usage and are sent to all known respondents.

Brewers, Distillers & Maltsters and Flour Millers produces UK level results, while Animal Feed produces results for Great Britain.
