Overview

Data on farm businesses are derived from a number of data sources.

The annual Farm Business Survey is the main evidence base, collecting data on many aspects of farm business economics at the farm level. The core questions in the survey remain fairly constant from year to year, with detailed data collected on outputs, inputs, profits, balance sheet data, diversification, labour usage, rents and off-farm income.

Additionally, each year a series of ‘modules’ are carried out, looking at specific issues. These modules vary from year to year. Recent examples include animal health and welfare economics, household income, agri-environment activities and energy usage.

Another data source is the June Survey of Agriculture. This provides valuable physical data on crop areas and livestock numbers. It also collects data on labour and farm structure, including area rented and area owned.

Technical Data

Farm Business Survey

The survey is comprised of one survey form and is interview based. The sample in England is approximately 2,000 farm businesses. To be eligible for the survey, each farm business has to have enough cropping and stocking to occupy a person for at least half their time.

Each farm is typically visited twice each year by a researcher. The researcher questions the farmer and also sifts out the supporting data from the farm’s accounts and supporting documents. The sample is stratified by farm type and size, to ensure a representative sample across England.

Results are published as headline incomes in October and towards the end of January. More detailed data on farm incomes are published in December, at Government Office Region (GOR) level and at England level. Additionally, results are published annually on diversification and household income separately.

June Survey of Agriculture

The June Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture is an annual postal survey that collects information relating to land use, crops, livestock, labour, horticulture and glasshouse. In most years, data are sought from a proportion of holdings only.

The sample size is between 40,000 and 70,000 holdings (dependent on EU requirements) in England. Holdings are sampled using a stratified random sample based on farm size.
