This estimate of time includes the hours of drivers but not passengers in cars, plus the hours of all individuals who use other private modes of transport (e.g. motorcycles or bikes) or walk. Time spent walking for exercise or pleasure has been excluded.
A very small proportion of total hours was spent on maintenance, with males spending more than twice as many hours as females on this activity. Transport services by males accounted for 51 per cent of total hours, three quarters of which was using motorised modes of transport. Females were more likely than males to use non-motorised modes of transport – one third of the total hours they spent providing transport services.
