TIME/LABOUR

  Volume

The volume of labour, which is an input to the household production process, is measured in hours. The source of information for this estimate is the UK 2000 Time Use Survey. For each project, the hours spent on associated activities, recorded both as primary and as secondary activities, have been added together. The estimates for childcare and adult care include an imputation for unrecorded passive care. The survey estimates have been weighted and grossed to the UK population using data derived from the Labour Force Survey, which exclude people living in institutions.

For further details, see Chapter 11 of the HHSA Methodology (downloads). See Sensitivity Analysis for results using only hours recorded as primary activity, and also primary and secondary activity time split equally between the two activities.

See Value for calculations of an hourly effective return to labour for each of the projects.
