To obtain the value of clothing output, we have taken the expenditure on fabrics, wool, haberdashery etc. and doubled it.
To obtain the value of washing, the total number of washloads (see Volume) is multiplied by the price of a service wash in a launderette. The source of information for this is a sample of 36 UK launderettes. It is important to note that the range in the price for an average wash load varies from £3.00 to £ 7.50, and we have used the mean. To obtain the value of ironing, the number of kilos of clothes ironed (see Volume) is multiplied by an ironing rate per kilo. The source of information for this is a sample of 22 UK launderettes, the prices range from £1.70 to £ 6.00, and again we have used the mean.
For further details, see Chapter 5 of the HHSA Methodology (downloads).
The value of the output of clothing and laundry services should be interpreted with caution, bearing in mind its sensitivity to some of the assumptions made. See Sensitivity Analysis for results using alternative prices.
