Gazetteer of the old and new geographies of the United Kingdom

The Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) between 1995 and 1998 resulted in major changes to the administrative structure of the United Kingdom. The two-tier structure in Scotland and Wales was completely abolished and replaced by a system of unitary authorities, and in England local government became more complex with some two-tier areas being replaced by unitary authorities and others maintaining their existing structure.

The Gazetteer of the old and new geographies of the United Kingdom is a comprehensive and illustrated guide to those changes. Not only does it relate all new administrative geographies to the former ones, it also links the new areas to Government Office Regions (GORs), Standard Statistical Regions (SSRs), Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics (NUTS) areas and health geographies.

Although the Gazetteer was a one-off publication after the LGR (and thus does not reflect the recent reorganisation of English health geography), there have been no major administrative changes since, and for specific details and maps of the LGR changes it remains an excellent source. In particular it provides clear demonstration of which areas of England have unitary authority status and which retain two-tier local government.

The Gazetteer is aimed at anyone with an interest, including private and public sector organisations as well as the general public. It is available below as a free pdf file.
