Information on tourism/ethnicity/socio-economic data/deprivation

These are all topics on which ONS Geography receive enquiries but are not issues we deal with directly. You may be able to find an answer to your query though by searching for an appropriate term via the National Statistics (NS) website homepage. Below is some more specific guidance:

Where can I get information on tourism?

The transport, travel and tourism theme pages of the NS website may prove useful. These can also be accessed via the menu on the left hand side of the NS homepage.

Where can I get information on ethnicity?

Ethnicity is not one of the NS website's 12 primary themes and therefore lacks a direct link from the homepage. However, if you go to the homepage and carry out a search on the term 'ethnic' then a range of resources and subject categories will be listed (Note: this is better than carrying out a search from this page).

Where can I get socio-economic data?

The social and welfare theme pages of the NS website offer a range of resources. Alternatively, if you are interested in a specific topic at a more local level, you may find what you need on any of the Neighbourhood Statistics websites:

Neighbourhood Statistics (primarily English and Welsh data)
Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics
Northern Ireland Neighbourhood Information Service

Where can I get information on which areas of the country are most deprived?

The Neighbourhood Statistics (NeSS) website contains deprivation indices for England and Wales for 2000 and England only for 2004. These allow you to compare different areas on a range of deprivation indicators, and also include the combined 'Indices of Multiple Deprivation'.

The 2000 indices are published for electoral wards/divisions, and for local authorities. The 2004 indices were the first ever dataset to use the much smaller Lower Layer Super Output Areas (SOAs), and are also produced for local authorities.

To access the indices, go to the NeSS homepage (above), select 'Find detailed statistics by subject', and then open up the list of 'Indices of Deprivation and Classifications'.

The Local Government Data Unit - Wales provides the Welsh Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2005 at Lower Layer Super Output Area (SOA) level.

The Scottish Executive website contains the Scottish Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2004, offering a similar range of data for Scotland at data zone level.

The Scottish Indices of Deprivation 2003 are available at electoral ward and council area levels.

The Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA) website includes reports and information on the 2005 deprivation indicators and the 2001 deprivation indicators for a range of geographies.
