Information on boundary change

I know that there were some electoral ward boundary changes in my area in 1999. Can you supply me with the details?

Ward level boundary change details are published in Statutory Instruments (SIs). Many of these are available online at http://www.hmso.gov.uk/stat.htm; your local library and council should also be able to provide information. However, as a starting point, you may find our ONS Geography User Guide useful. Covering the period between the 1991 Census and the 2001 Census, this contains maps showing which local authorities have experienced change, and also names the relevant SIs.

I want details of the ongoing boundary review in my area. Do you have these?

Boundary reviews are carried out by the Boundary Committee for England (BCFE), which replaced the Local Government Commission for England (LGCE) on 1 April 2002. Although ONS Geography receives details of draft and final recommendations, the best place to look is the BCFE website; the linked page allows you to access their recommendations and accompanying maps. The site also allows you to view press releases relating to changes in each local authority, gives information on which areas are scheduled for review, and also explains the principles behind the review process. If you have further queries about the process going on in your area, the BCFE is the best contact.

Which districts experienced ward boundary changes this year?

Although you will have to contact BCFE for specific details, ONS Geography produces annual summary lists of those local authorities experiencing electoral ward/division boundary change. The following are available in MS Excel (.xls) format:

Local authorities with May 2002 ward boundary changes (26Kb xls)
Local authorities with May 2003 ward boundary changes (30Kb xls)
Local authorities with June 2004 ward boundary changes (22Kb xls)
