Communal Establishment File

The Communal Establishment File has been withdrawn from the website for reasons of potential disclosure. If you have any queries regarding the File or its removal, please contact ONS Geography.

Communal establishments are locations where people live for a period of time in shared accommodation (eg hospitals, rest homes, prisons, boarding schools and halls of residence). Each one has a unique code for the purposes of registering any births or deaths that occur there.

The ONS Geography Communal Establishment File contains a list of codes, names and addresses for communal establishments. For each entry ONS birth, death and registration district codes are also provided, as well as an indicator of whether the establishment is part of the NHS. Only establishments where births or deaths have occurred are included.

The main users of the file are ONS birth and death statistics processors, and extracts are supplied annually to the registrar in each registration district.
