Best Practice Guidance

Part of the remit of ONS Geography's work is to promote a standardised, 'Best Practice' approach to the use of geography in statistics.

The draft Geography Policy for National Statistics provides details of the approach now being promoted for used for the production of National Statistics. It is hoped that the policy statement will be formally agreed as a National Statistics standard early in 2007.

The following resources also support the aim of harmonisation:

Presentation Order Guidance Administrative areas; Health areas; Electoral areas

Area Classifications National Statistics Area Classification; Rural and Urban Area Classification 2004.

Standard Names and Codes (SNAC) Single annual product containing definitive names and codes for a range of UK geographies; also alternative administrative area names and codes used by other government departments.

Beginners Guide to Geographic Referencing An illustrated description of the principles of referencing data to geography. In particular, the document focuses on the merits of using grid references as opposed to postcodes.
