Focus on People and Migration describes the dynamics of the UK population. It includes information on changes in the age structure of the UK, on population growth and the role of fertility and migration in driving population change.

The UK population is growing. Until the mid-1990s this growth was mainly due to the number of births exceeding deaths. While natural change has continued, since the late 1990s net international migration into the UK from abroad has been an increasingly important factor in population growth.

The UK population is becoming older. Low fertility and mortality rates have both contributed to this population ageing. There is a declining proportion of the population aged under 16 and an increasing proportion aged 65 and over.
