This pyramid projects the economically active population using 2000-based population projections up to 2010. It was produced using a combination of Labour Force Survey (LFS) data and population projections from the Government Actuaries Department (GAD). Economic activity rates were calculated using Spring 2001 LFS data and applied to the projected population figures from GAD. Stable rates were assumed.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITY PROJECTIONS 2002-2010 USING 2000-BASED NATIONAL POPULATION PROJECTIONS AND SPRING 2001 ACTIVITY RATES, UNITED KINGDOM
Population pyramids graphically present an age/sex distribution. A pyramid comprises two histograms placed on their sides and back to back. Pyramids are always drawn showing the male population on the left hand side and the female population on the right. The young are always at the bottom and the old at the top. Single years of age have been used here although it is possible to use five or ten year age groupings.
Future work
Regrossed Labour Force Survey data will be published in April 2002. ONS is planning to produce updated national labour force projections following the release of the regrossed data. Publication online is planned for September with an article to follow in Labour Market Trends later in the year. For more information, e-mail Paul.Doyle@ons.gov.uk
