Tips using Neighbourhood Statistics to access Key Statistics for health areas
Introduction
There is no need to register or log in to use the site - the registration facility is optional but allows a user to be regularly updated about Neighbourhood Statistics
The following interfaces on the homepage - detailed statistics by subject or area name, or interactive map - provide a means of navigating to health area statistics
Detailed statistics by subject
Click the 'Detailed statistics by subject' option, which will open a list of Key Statistics tables, each with it's own list of geographical coverages.
For health area data choose a table for 2003 Health Areas, for example
Click 'View' to display the selected table for the United Kingdom. Click the 'United Kingdom' link in the first column of the table, then click succesively on 'Great Britain', 'England & Wales', 'England' 'East Midlands' and so on, to drill down to the data for specific Strategic Health Authorities and Primary Care Trusts.
Detailed statistics by area name
Click the 'Detailed statistics by area name' option, which will open a default list of expandable geography. To view data for health areas click the 'Change' button, and click on the second option presented - '2003 Health Areas'.
This presents the required list of expandable geography. Click on a region name to expand the list, which will allow lower level areas - specific Strategic Health Authorities and Primary Care Trusts - to be selected.
Interactive map
The interactive map option provides the easiest first viewing of health area statistics - by clicking on the maps rather than selecting from a list of names
click the Interactive map image towards the bottom of the page, which will open a new window
click the ‘Change’ button on the right hand side, which will display a number of hierarchies
click the radio button next to the '2003 Health Areas' option, and click the ‘Apply’ button - this will load the required a map
to magnify the map either select the ‘Zoom In’ button and repeatedly click on the map to display progressively larger scale views, select the ‘Zoom In’ button and then click and drag over the area you want to zoom into (the smaller the area selected, the further you will zoom), or directly enter a postcode to zoom straight to a larger scale map
when the map has been magnified sufficiently, Output Area boundaries and codes appear, together with ward boundaries. Clicking the radio button for ‘Output Areas’ then allows an Output Area to be selected. Note that to select Output Areas, you need to have zoomed sufficiently into the map (a prompt will appear advising if a sufficient level of zooming has not been applied). Printing the view will produce coverage of a slightly larger area.
General
Key Statistics are not identified by table number - instead table titles are listed in alphabetical order of first word in the title
The conditions of use must be accepted once each session before statistics can be viewed (the current page of conditions will be slimlined)
The site uses Beyond 20/20 software which
provides complete headings for each column or row of a table - there are no banner headings to show where a population is subdivided
provides 'next rows/next columns' and/or 'previous rows/previous columns' links, which when clicked move parts of larger tables or lists into view
provides functions to 'customise' tables [more details....] but does not provide functions online to add numbers within tables or to add numbers for areas together
provides functions to visualise information in tables through the ' view as a chart' option
Key Statistics can be downloaded by selecting a table and area, clicking 'download', and choosing the file format (CSV, XLS or IVT). When intending to download multiple files, when prompted in each download box, ensure that the file is renamed from 'download' to something recognisable, so that downloading any subsequent data does not overwrite the previous file downloaded.
