I have both the July 2003 DVD and the February 2004
DVD, how do I tell them apart as they have the same title?
The February 2004 has the date printed on the disc surface, to the right of the Census 2001 logo, and all of the packaging contains the date just after the title.
I copied the data from the previous DVD onto my PC. Should I delete this?
You are advised to delete all the files copied from the previous DVD and to replace them with the files contained on the DVD released February 2004. This will ensure that you are using the full and correct set of tables.
How do I start using the DVD?
Put the DVD in your DVD drive. It will start up automatically and you will be presented with a screen that asks you to accept or decline the ONS conditions of supply. After accepting the conditions you will be presented with a screen containing a number of buttons that allows you to browse the data on the DVD and provide information about the DVD and about the Census.
Does the DVD run on an Apple Mac?
The facility to download and manipulate the data is not available to Mac users because SuperTABLE software cannot be installed on an Apple Mac.
Installation Do I have to install the contents of the DVD on my computer?
No, the contents can be accessed with the DVD in the DVD drive but SuperTABLE must be installed from the DVD. If you are connected to a network you may need to seek the assistance of your network administrator to install SuperTABLE. When you put the DVD in your DVD drive, the first screen that you see shows you the conditions of supply and provides you with options to view or install.
I am encountering issues when attempting to install and use SuperTABLE. For example, either error messages appear at installation or, once installed using an administrators account, users cannot start the application when they logon and have insufficient authority to access the appropriate folders. Can ONS help?
There are a number of reasons why an install of SuperTABLE may fail or prove difficult, and administration privileges applied to PCs can impede installation. Unfortunately ONS is unable to provide technical support regarding the installation of SuperTABLE, but further information can be found at the manufacturer’s website in pages such as
HERE or by contacting
support@str.com.au. Note that ONS has been informed by one customer that McAfee anti-virus software would not accept SuperTABLE. Disabling the virus check enabled them to install successfully.
I installed SuperTABLE from the previous DVD released in July 2003. Do I need to reinstall?
No. The same version of SuperTABLE is included on both DVDs and you do not need to reinstall this.
Finding results How do I view the Census results?
Put the DVD in your DVD drive. It will start up automatically and you will be presented with a screen that asks you to accept or decline the Census conditions of supply.
On accepting the conditions of supply you will be presented with a screen that allows you to choose to either browse the data or copy the data from the DVD on to a computer or network.
If you choose to browse the DVD using the 'Find a SuperTABLE’ option, a screen allows you to select Census tables for wards from a list. On selection, a table will open in the SuperTABLE software provided on the CD, which you will need to install first.
How do I find out what tables are on this DVD, and what topics are covered?
A facility to browse a list of table titles is provided on the DVD, and an Excel file contained on the disc allows you to search for tables by keyword and topic.
Why does nothing happen when I click on tables S133 - S148, T15, T39, and UV84 for England and Wales, England, and Government Office Regions in England
These tables apply to Wales only.
When I click on the links for some tables in the 'Find a SuperTABLE’ section I get another window with a further list of links. Why is this?
For technical reasons it was not possible to include the complete geography for some tables in a single SuperTABLE file. Tables relating to migration (S008-S010, S134, S135, S146, T33, and T34) and table T10 are split into 7 SuperTABLE files, each containing the table for a specified geography, from England & Wales to ward level. Table T34 is further split at ward level, with the wards in each Government Office region contained in a separate SuperTABLE file (meaning that
this table is split across a total of 16 files). Table T33 is also further split at ward level, but into only three separate files, containing Inflow and Outflow for England & Wales, Outflow for Scotland, and Outflow for Northern Ireland (meaning that this table is split across a total of 9 files).
Using SuperTABLE How do I manipulate or download the Census results?
When you use the product, a screen is available which enables you to select Census tables on the DVD. To use this option you must first have installed SuperTABLE, and instructions for doing so are provided on the DVD.
When I click on the option to 'Find a SuperTABLE’ I am prompted to open the file or save the file. Which should I choose?
To view the data when browsing the DVD select the option to open the file. This will enable you to view the table using SuperTABLE. Saving the file will place the file in a folder on your PC.
Why does nothing happen when I click on the icon that offers to let me 'Find a SuperTABLE’?
To use this facility you must first have installed some software called 'SuperTABLE’, which is available on the DVD. Advice on installing SuperTABLE is available on the DVD. If you have already installed SuperTABLE it is possible that the install has not fully completed. This can be easily resolved by opening up SuperTABLE and then closing it.
Some footnotes are truncated when I copy files to other formats. What can I do?
Some of the footnotes of the Standard Tables can be truncated during this. A list of table titles and footnotes is provided on the DVD. A complete set of footnotes can be viewed in the PDF versions of the published England and Wales tables available HERE
When I click on the list of tables in 'Find a SuperTABLE' nothing happens for up to a minute. Is there a fault?
The SuperTABLE files are very large and can take up to a minute to open.
How do I use SuperTABLE?
A Census specific tutorial is available from the Help option within the SuperTABLE application.
I have looked at the SuperTABLE files on the DVD and there seem to be multiple files for some tables. Why is this?
For technical reasons it was not possible to include the complete geography for some tables in a single SuperTABLE file. Tables relating to migration (S008-S010, S134, S135, S146, T33, and T34)and table T10 are split into 7 SuperTABLE files, each containing the table for a specified geography, from England & Wales to ward level. Table T34 is further split at ward level, with the wards in
each Government Office region contained in a separate SuperTABLE file (meaning that this table is split across a total of 16 files). Table T33 is also further split at ward level, but into only three separate files, containing Inflow and Outflow for England & Wales, Outflow for Scotland, and Outflow for Northern Ireland (meaning that this table is split across a total of 9 files).
I have found the separate SuperTABLE files for table T33 that contain the ward level data for Inflow and Outflow for England & Wales, Outflow for Scotland, and Outflow
for Northern Ireland respectively, but I cannot find a file that includes the net migration. Where is it?
For technical reasons this table at ward level was produced in three separate SuperTABLE files as described. This means that net migration counts could not be produced in a SuperTABLE file for this table at this geography. Customers interested in specific areas may wish to use spreadsheet
software to aggregate the data for these areas and work out net migration counts.
I have found the SuperTABLE files for tables S130-S132 which contain data down to local authority level, but the ward level data seems to be missing. Where is it? Table
T10 also seems to have blank cells in the industry rows at ward level. Why is this?
All of these tables relate to workplace. ONS is reviewing a potential risk that information about workplaces could be disclosed through Census tables on workplace populations. For this reason Tables S130, S131 and S132 are not provided for wards on this DVD but results for local authorities are provided for reference. For the same reason the industry rows in table T10 are blank, but similar rows for local authorities and above do contain data.
Loading data into databases The data on the DVD is SuperTABLE format and is not suitable for loading into a database. In addition, the Save as CSV option does not produce a comma separated file that I can use for this purpose. Is the data available in other formats?
All the tables on the DVD are also available in a csv format specifically designed by ONS for loading into database systems, and can be obtained free of charge by contacting Census Customer Services (contact details below).
I have received the CSV data from ONS and it includes area codes in the file. I need to know the names of these areas.
Information about names and codes is provided on the DVD and is available HERE.
General I think that I have found some errors on the DVD, how do I confirm this and find out if they have been corrected?
It is possible that some errors have been discovered on the DVD since it was published. Any such errors will be noted in the Census product error log available HERE which is regularly updated. As well as explaining any errors, the log contains details of how the error has been corrected; how the corrected information can be obtained; and, where applicable, links to further information. If the error log does not list the specific error you have found, please contact Census Customer Services using the contact details listed below.
Getting started When looking at the DVD content in Windows Explorer I found two files relating to sample
data. What are these for?
Unfortunately, in initial production runs of the DVD, two draft small design templates were transferred with the final set of files. These files are only visible if the content of the
DVD is interrogated by Windows Explorer (or equivalent)and perform no function on the DVD. They refer to previous sample material and can be ignored.
Using SuperTABLE I cannot find a SuperTABLE file for table T15, where is it?
For technical reasons this table was not included on this DVD when released in July 2003. The table is included on the version that was released in February 2004.
