The latest technology was used to process over 24 million Census forms, with forms scanned at high speed, and responses coded electronically using automated and computer assisted methods. The colour of the forms had been chosen specifically for its ability to fade into the background, facilitating Optical Mark and Optical Character Recognition. An external service provider, Lockheed Martin processed the 2001 Census and the Processing project was responsible for agreeing and implementing the interfaces between the contractor and ONS. The project set up procedures and systems required to satisfy contractual responsibilities, and ensured the services provided were in accordance to the timetable and to agreed quality standards.
