Geography Area Planning System (GAPS)
The Geography project was responsible for providing geographical support to all aspects of the census operation. To simplify counting the population, the country was divided into small geographical areas, know as Enumeration Districts (EDs). These areas were divided between 62,500 temporary staff called Enumerators who were required to deliver a Census form to every household within its boundaries. On average, each Enumerator was allocated two Enumeration Districts. Approximately 117,000 Enumeration Districts were planned using the Geography Area Planning System (GAPS), an electronic mapping system. To assist the Enumerators locate all households in their area, lists of addresses and maps of the area were provided.
Geography and Support of Processing
Geographical support and reference information was provided to many other projects throughout the Census operation. During the processing phase of the Census, geographical queries were resolved and all forms were assigned a valid enumeration postcode and accurate grid reference. The Geography project was also involved in mapping the areas for which Census results have been made available.
