The Census Coverage Survey (CCS) was designed to measure the number of those missed in the 2001 Census, enabling accurate population estimates to be produced.
Conducted independently of the Census, the Census Coverage Survey started four weeks after Census Day and took place from 24th May - 17th June 2001. A sample of 16,000 postcodes (320,000 households) were chosen and over 4,000 field staff were used to conduct short doorstep interviews on selected Census questions.
Unlike the Census Enumerators, the CCS Interviewers were not supplied with address lists, only maps of the area. This was designed to find those households who had not been included in the Census. The information gathered by the Census Coverage Survey was used by the One Number Census project to adjust the 2001 Census results to take account of those missed.
