ONS announced on 9 March that more Census results on workplaces and journeys to work in England and Wales will be produced and released following decisions by the National Statistician after the conclusion of the review of possible disclosure risks.
The Census Area Statistics (CAS) omitted from the main release in August/September 2003 were released on 7 May. They include tables on workplace populations for Output Areas, wards, local authorities and higher areas, and tables on migration at Output Area and ward level, throughout England and Wales, with the exception of two planned workplace tables on industry and occupation. The matrices of journeys to work and migration moves at Output Area level, but for no higher levels, were released at the same time. The more detailed matrices for higher geographical areas will be released over the period from May to September 2004.
Census Area Statistics
Five of the seven delayed CAS tables on workplace, all of which are univariate, are available at Output Area and higher levels. They are tables UV37 (method of travel (daytime population)), UV75 (age), UV76 (NS-SEC), UV78 (approximate social grade), and UV80 (distance travelled to work). Tables UV77 (industry) and UV79 (occupation) will not be released at any geographical level, although information on industry and occupation at local authority level and on occupation at ward level, is already available through the Standard Tables.
All delayed CAS tables on migration are available for Output Areas and wards. They are tables CAS008 (resident type and age by migration), CAS009 (dependent children by migration of household), CAS010 (household composition by migration of household), UV23 (migration (people)) and UV52 (migration (households)). Equivalent results on migration at local authority level and above are available through Standard Tables.
Two further delayed CAS tables on residents, CAS120 (distance to work by method of travel) and CAS121 (NS-SEC by method of travel), and five further CAS univariate tables on residents, UV02 (population density), UV29 (economic activity of full-time students), UV35 (distance to work), UV39 (method of travel) and UV55 (dwellings), are also included, and this completes the release of CAS for Output Areas, wards, local authorities and higher areas. Outlines of all the tables may be viewed HERE.
All tables are supplied on a single DVD in SuperTABLE or CSV format to all existing customers for CAS, or on request from new customers. There is normally no charge. More information about use of the Census Area Statistics for wards and Output Areas part 2 DVD may be found in the Frequently Asked Questions
Matrices of journeys to work and migration moves
The matrix of journeys to work containing table W301 (mode of travel to place of work) and the matrix of migration moves containing table MG301 (migrants by age and sex ) at Output Area level, but for no higher level, are now available.
The matrices are supplied on a single DVD for the UK as a whole. Table W301 was not produced for Northern Ireland, and is not included on the DVD. Table TV301, equivalent to W301, for Scotland covers mode of travel to place of work or study.
The DVD has been supplied to meet existing orders normally without charge. However, appropriate software is required to use the data and Census Customer Services will be making contact to check whether users require direct supply or will be obtaining the data through the services of an intermediary supplier of software.
