Key Statistics for postcode sectors in England and Wales
The report with Key Statistics and profiles for postcode sectors in England and Wales was published on 30 March. This provides valuable benchmarks and comparative information to support the widespread use of postal geography.
Royal Mail maintains a system of freely available postcodes for every address in the UK for the handling and delivery of mail which has also become a common basis for organising other information collected in the public and private sectors.
In print and on CD
The results are contained on a CD accompanying the report [£45 ISBN 0 11 621749 9] and contains information for each postcode sector in England and Wales. Details of how to order the report are available which is available HERE.
The printed part of the report also has information to help the newcomer. The report also succeeds a series of printed pamphlets - 'Postcode Sector Monitors' - issued after the 1991 Census for each county, although the amount of information provided for 2001 is much more extensive. A print on demand service for extracts of the report will be provided if required.
Online
The printed part of the report is also downloadable free from the National Statistics website HERE.
Electronic
In addition, a CD in CSV format containing the Key Statistics tables and profiles is available on request from Census Customer Services.
The figures for postcode sectors have been derived from adding together the best fit of Output Areas to each sector. The postcode sectors are as at the time of the Census in April 2001, and figures have not been released for sectors which are below the minimum confidentiality thresholds of 100 residents and 40 households.
Outlines of the Key Statistics are HERE and outlines of the profiles for sectors are HERE.
Earlier plans to include the more detailed Census Area Statistics (CAS), maps, and updates on this CD have been dropped for technical reasons, but a look up table of Output Areas by sector available from Census Customer Services on the "Output Area to Higher Areas CD", to permit the user to aggregate CAS to sectors and to derive boundaries for the sectors from the vector boundaries of OAs, also available from Census Customer Services.
