2001 Census Key Statistics for Super Output Areas
ONS will be making 2001 Key Statistics and univariate tables for the lower or 'level 1' Super Output Areas available through Neighbourhood Statistics.
The Super Output Areas are a stable base for the presentation of Neighbourhood Statistics, and more information is available HERE. The lower level of some 34,378 areas has now been defined and provides units of relatively constant population size which are intermediate between the smaller Output Areas and the variably sized wards.
The Key Statistics tables will be re-run for the Super Output Areas and there will be further announcements in Census News about the release.
2004 wards
A new set of 2001 Census Key Statistics and univariate tables will be produced on CD for 2004 wards, defined in terms of the 'best fit' of Output Areas.
The 2001 Census results released so far for wards have used the boundaries legally in existence on 31 December 2002 in line with National Statistics policy on harmonisation of boundary changes, and to meet a widespread user demand for up to date areas, but in the year following the boundaries of wards in 19 local authorities (listed HERE) have been revised, and are known as '2004 wards'.
The timing of the release of the Key Statistics depends of the supply of digital versions of the new boundaries, but release will be as soon as possible, and a further announcement will be made in Census News.
ONS is prepared to consider the production of new sets of the more detailed Census Area Statistics (CAS) for the 2004 wards, and statements of requirements should be sent as soon as possible to Census Customer Services.
ONS will also supply look up tables of the constitutions of the 2004 wards in terms of Output Areas to help users who wish to re-aggregate their own holdings of Key Statistics or Census Area Statistics (CAS) to new wards. The Output Areas are 'best fitted' to the new wards on the basis of the majority of population in the parts of a split Output Area, a calculation only possible within ONS. Users' re-aggregations may differ slightly from figures released by ONS as small cell adjustment will be applied by ONS to the figures for the new wards after tables have been re-run. Requests for look up tables should be made to Census Customer Services.
Other new wards
ONS has information on changes to wards in a further 19 local authorities which were not legally in existence on 31 December 2003 but which are now legally in existence or are expected to become so before the end of 2004. ONS is prepared to supply ward to OA look up tables on a 'best fit' basis for these authorities and to consider commissions to produce Key Statistics or CAS for new wards in advance of April 2005, when it is expected that Key Statistics will be released for the '2005 wards'. Enquiries should be made to Census Customer Services.
