A series of reports drawing on information from many sources, including the 2001 Census, has been launched by the Office for National Statistics as Web publications. These previously had the working title of 'multi source topic reports'.
First released are Focus on Wales and its people, on Ethnicity and identity, and on Gender. The complete list of titles is HERE.
The first releases are overviews, each of which combines data from the 2001 Census and other sources to illustrate a topic, and provide links to further information. The on-line overviews will be followed up with more comprehensive analysis in fuller reports. Many of the Census tables prepared specially as the basis for the overviews and further analysis are already available without charge for general use [more details...]
Focus on Wales: Its People
"Focus on Wales: Its People paints a picture of the people of Wales. It includes information on their characteristics, sense of national identity, ethnic diversity and Welsh language skills, as well as looking at the Welsh-born living elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
Wales is revealed as a land with a growing but ageing population, with an increasing proportion of residents coming from outside its borders. National identity is strong, and is reinforced by the increase in people able to speak the Welsh language, particularly among the young. Despite this strength of identity, Wales has an increasingly diverse mix of cultures and ethnic backgrounds, centred around Cardiff and its other major towns and cities."
Focus on Ethnicity and Identity
"Focus on Ethnicity and Identity paints a picture of the ethnic groups in the UK today. It includes information on their characteristics, lifestyles and experiences, placing particular emphasis on comparing and contrasting the main groups.
The 2001 Census revealed that the UK today is more culturally diverse than ever before. The 4.6 million people from a variety of non-White backgrounds are not evenly distributed across the country, tending to live in the large urban areas. The different groups share some characteristics but there are often greater differences between the individual ethnic groups than between the minority ethnic population as a whole and the White British people."
Focus on Gender
"Focus on Gender paints a picture of the relative lives of men and women in contemporary UK society. It includes information on their characteristics, experiences and lifestyles, placing particular emphasis on gender differences.
In many ways, the lives of women and men have become more similar, as more and more women have entered the labour market. Despite this, differences remain. Although the pay gap has narrowed, women still earn less than men and follow very different career paths. Furthermore, the majority of the responsibility for household chores and childcare is still the province of women. Women can expect to live longer than men but these extra years of life may not be years of healthy life."
