It was announced in late October 2003 that the plans for the second part of the National Report, together with all remaining output, were under review [more information...], and that revised plans would be published in Census News as soon as possible.
A revised schedule for remaining Census results has been published in the Output Prospectus [more details....], including publication of the second and final part of the National Report for England and Wales on 3 February 2004 [more details...] and release of further Standard Tables for wards on the same date. This follows progress with a review announced in October of disclosure risks in tables about workplaces, and progress with production of tables on out migrants. The bilingual report on the Welsh language in Wales will be published on 10 February 2004 [more details...].
Most remaining output is included in the new schedule, but the dates for the release of the remaining parts or sets of Census Area Statistics (CAS) will be announced later when the review of disclosure risks is completed or when development of products is sufficiently advanced.
Progress
ONS has completed the first phase of the review of potential risk that information about individual workplaces could be disclosed through Census tables on workplace populations. This has resulted in some relatively minor modifications to the classification of industry of workplace populations in the tables to be released at local authority level, but, until further stages of the review have been completed, no tables with the industry of workplace populations are being released at ward level. The inclusion of workplace tables in Census Areas Statistics also remains under review.
There has also been progress with the production of tables about out migrants which was being slowed by technical problems affecting SuperCROSS tables. This means that the first of the remaining releases of Census results for England and Wales will contain workplace and out migrant tables largely as planned.
Early release of workplace tables
ONS made it clear that it was fully aware of the need for timely availability of Census results. With this in mind, the Office consulted quickly with key users on options for the future timetable. A strong case was made for the early release of workplace tables at local authority level to assist strategic studies for local authorities and higher administrative areas.
In response, the table on distance travelled to work and gender by method of travel (S129) together with the theme table (T10) which contains information on gender, age, family status, occupation NS-SeC (socio economic groups), industry, distance travelled to work and method of travel for people who are either resident or work in each local authority are now available in a downloadable format. Table S129 is available HERE and theme table T10 is available HERE. Early releases of these tables at ward level are also available on request from Census Customer Services.
