Census Area Statistics for health areas in England and Wales
Census Areas Statistics
Census Area Statistics (CAS) are now available for each Primary Care Trust (PCT) and Strategic Health Authority in England, and for Local Health Boards in Wales. These relate to the population of each area as a whole, and add considerable detail to the Key Statistics released in July 2003. CAS for smaller areas within PCTs are already available [more details...].
The CAS for health areas are available on a DVD for England and Wales as a whole on request from Census Customer Services in either SuperTABLE or CSV format without charge under Census Access terms.
Revised Key Statistics
ONS announced some corrections to the boundaries used for the Key Statistics for health areas issued in July, and figures based on the correct boundaries are now available on the Neighbourhood Statistics Website (guidance on navigation is HERE).
The Key Statistics report and supplementary CD have now been corrected, and the revised versions published on 9 December. They are being distributed to the purchasers of the original versions by The Stationery Office. Census Customer Services are re-supplying CSV versions of the CD.
Any purchaser of the original versions, particularly 'over the counter' in a Stationery Office bookshop, not receiving the revised version by the end of December should contact Census Customer Services who will arrange for copies to be supplied.
Standard Tables
The planned release of the more detailed Standard Tables for health areas is under review, as the geographical base is not always straightforward.
PCTs generally comprise of whole wards, although PCT boundaries split 112 wards, but, in 92 of the 402 PCTs, the ward boundaries predate those legally in force on 31 December 2002 and used for the release of Standard Tables. Output Areas have been 'best fitted' to PCT boundaries where necessary for the production and release of the Key Statistics and CAS, but ONS is still considering whether and how Standard Tables could be released for the 92 PCTs where the boundaries of the Standard Table wards do not coincide with those of the PCT, and a risk of disclosure of statistics for population below the confidentiality thresholds might arise through the differencing of overlapping sets of Tables.
