The 2001 Census National Report for England and Wales was published and laid before Parliament on 7 May. It is a uniquely valuable source which fills out the picture of the country as a whole and each local authority given by the Key Statistics released on 13 February 2003. In particular, it shows many relationships between Census topics, for example the links between age, social group, and health.
The printed report contains tables of the figures for England and Wales as a whole. Details of how to order the printed report [£65 ISBN 0 11 621654 9], together with free downloadable pdf versions, are available HERE.
These national results and those for England, Wales and the England regions, and local authorities - equivalent to the entire content of the series of 1991 Census County Reports - are released on a CD. The CD is available from ONS on request without charge.
The CD contains a substantial volume of statistical information, some quite complex. It is designed mainly for users of all types who are reasonably familiar with the Census and statistical material, and who wish to explore and analyse 2001 Census results in some depth. The National Statistics Website provides quick access to summary results in the Key Statistics.
Content of the National Report
The National Report provides detailed results from every topic covered by the 2001 Census. The list of tables to be included in the National Report may be viewed HERE (34kb pdf file) and an index to the topics covered by the various tables can be viewed HERE (53kb pdf file). Outlines of the tables included in the National Report may be viewed as pdf files through the Census Output Prospectus.
The results are presented for: England and Wales as a whole; England; Wales; Government Office Regions in England; Unitary Authorities, Counties, Districts, and former counties in England; Unitary Authorities in Wales; and National Parks in England and Wales. All areas legally in force on 31 December 2002, although in effect these have remained unchanged from Census Day 2001.
The content of the Report was developed through wide ranging consultation mainly between 1999 and 2001 with potential users of the Census. The same set of output will be released for wards - with up to date boundaries - to give the picture of Census results within each local authority, and simpler sets of output will be released for smaller areas. The Output Prospectus provides more information.
Changes to content
Fifteen simple tables (known as 'univariate' in consultation) previously only included in the Census Area Statistics have been included in the National Report so that results are released as soon as possible at local authority level and these are shown separately at the end of the list of tables.
A further seventeen tables covering migration and workplace will be published in a supplementary report. A list of these tables may be viewed HERE (20kb pdf file). The production of these tables depends on the coding of address one year ago and address of workplace to Output Areas, and production has been delayed until Output Areas became available. Results in the Welsh Language
All tables on the Welsh language have been released in Welsh as Excel spreadsheets with results for Wales as a whole and for Unitary Authorities in Wales. 'Templates' in Welsh for the same tables are also available to allow results on the Welsh language for wards in Wales to be copied into an Excel table with Welsh text. The spreadsheets and templates are available without charge from Census Customer Services (or by calling 001329 444972).
Availability
A copy of the CD is available without charge to purchasers of the printed Report and to any other Census user. It has been distributed to local authorities and other key users [more details...].
Requests for the CD should be made by e-mail to census.customerservices@ons.gov.uk or by calling 001329 444972. Copies will be sent by post and full postal addresses with telephone numbers should be supplied. A charge may be made to recover the material costs of supplying orders for multiple copies from a single organisation or individual.
Using the CD
The 'headline' results - all Key Statistics in percentage form and Standard Tables for England and Wales, England, Wales and the English Regions - are viewable on virtually all PCs. Access to the more detailed results requires installation and use of the 'SuperTABLE' software supplied on the CD, and familiarsation through the tutorial on the CD is recommended. If it is planned to install the software on a PC connected to a network, an organisation may have recommended procedures to follow and assistance should be sought from a local systems administrator.
When the CD is inserted into a drive, the conditions of supply screen will be presented, incorporating a link to the Read Me file which includes the 'Guide to Getting Started' (printed copies are also supplied with the CD). Following the Guide will enable all the information in the Report to be explored with the CD present in the drive.
