Cross-tabulations released in the Census Area Statistics (CAS) on DVD in 2003 and 2004 for local authorities, wards and Output Areas in England and Wales are available without charge online on Nomis - the service run by the University of Durham under contract to ONS primarily to provide manpower statistics but also including output from the Census on all topics. This marks a major increase in the 2001 Census results which can be accessed by all online.
A newcomer to the Nomis service will find an introduction to the service HERE. There is an option to register, 'wizards' that provide step by step guides to use, and Nomis help lines. Those who are familiar with Nomis may prefer to go direct to the 2001 Census content HERE.
Nomis offers the choice to download whole CAS tables or to select and download single counts or extracts from tables through either 'wizard' or advanced options. Users can click to explanatory information throughout the service, but should note that texts have been written for the web service and links are provided to comprehensive ONS documents.
The Nomis service supplements the more summary Census results for the same areas available on Neighbourhood Statistics - the Key Statistics and univariate counts from the CAS - by providing CAS cross-tabulations which show inter relationships between many characteristics of the population. The tables available on Nomis are all those in the CAS001 to CAS147 series.
Neighbourhood Statistics offers Census results for more types of area, and Nomis does not offer a duplicate source for the Key Statistics as such, or the univariate tables. Neighbourhood Statistics also offers a comprehensive interactive map option for selecting results by area. This shows boundaries of Census areas down to the most detailed level of Output Area on large scale Ordnance Survey maps. Nomis uses less detailed interactive maps only at the Output Areas level as a means of selecting areas.
