Key Statistics for settlements in England and Wales
The Key Statistics for settlements with fewer than 1,500 people in England and Wales were released on 18 November 2004. These tables provide summary results for areas of urban land with populations too small to be included in the Key Statistics for urban areas and Census Area Statistics for urban areas already produced, and are an easy-to-use source of Census results for small local areas which do not follow administrative boundaries.
The results are produced by approximating the boundaries of the settlement by Output Areas and producing the Census counts for that group of Output Areas. The Output Areas making up each settlement are identified in the Output Area to higher areas lookup file, also available from Census Customer Services.
A CD containing the results in Excel format is available, usually free of charge, from Census Customer Services. More information on Census results for urban areas is provided in the Census News article announcing the release of the Key Statistics for urban areas.
Note:
This product completes the planned release of Census results for areas of urban land defined using a 'bricks and mortar' approach also used in 1981 and 1991 Censuses. A new definition and classification of rural and urban areas has recently been published, but a final version was not available at the time the first Census results for urban areas were prepared. Census results showing the breakdown of the population of regions, counties and unitary authorities by the new definition and classification are being prepared. More details will follow in Census News.
