Census Area Statistics for urban areas in England and Wales
The Census Area Statistics for urban areas in England and Wales were released on 21 October 2004. These provide detailed results for all urban areas with at least 1,500 people and follows the publication of the Key Statistics for urban areas in June 2004.
A DVD containing the results in either SuperTABLE or CSV format is available, usually free of charge, from Census Customer Services. DVDs or CDs containing digitised urban area boundaries and summary results for small settlements (areas of urban land with fewer than 1,500 people) will be made available later in 2004.
More information on Census results for urban areas is provided in the Census News article announcing the release of the Key Statistics for urban areas.
Which places are included?
Information about the definition of urban areas - essentially a 'bricks and mortar' approach also used in 1981 and 1991 identifying areas of urban land use of 20 hectares or more with 1,500 or more residents - is provided in the report 'Key Statistics for urban areas in England and Wales' available online here. 'Rural areas' were not defined as such, although summary results for populations outside urban areas were released for completeness and for comparison with other Censuses.
A new definition and classification of rural areas has recently been published, but a final version was not available at the time the Census results were being prepared. Smaller settlements with populations between 1,500 and 10,000 presented as urban areas in the Census Area Statistics are included in the new definition of rural areas, but the new definition is comparable, in part through the common use of Output Areas as building bricks, and it is possible to compile statistics from the published Census results to fit the new definition. Census results showing the breakdown of the population of regions, counties and unitary authorities by the new definition and classification are being prepared. More details will follow in Census News.
